The course design of the Diploma uniquely includes practice in facilitating a "real course" which is itself a facilitator training. The first year consists of the Certificate in Facilitator Development. A significant part of the second—or “Diploma” - year consists of participating and assisting in the facilitation of, in effect, the next "first year".
The “Diploma Year” includes opportunities for personal development as it applies to the business of facilitation, as well as the visioning, design, planning and implementation of the Certificate Course.
Participants are engaged at different levels:
1. as members of a peer group moving towards autonomy;
2. as co-facilitators of a "real course" which is about training facilitators and which they themselves have completed in year 1;
3. as co-enquirers into the dynamics of a course within a course, and the effects this has on power, leadership and control.
The Diploma provides for a balance between facilitation practice and reflection on the development of a "live course". This reflection and learning occurs both within and aside from the Certificate group. Participants also engage in mentoring with the primary facilitator, and peer supervision of outside work.
· Group process is employed as a baseline for exploring personal and interpersonal dynamics.
· Group members have plenty of opportunities for facilitating this, individually, with a co-facilitator, using a `buddy', and using group `eyes' and `ears'.
· Participants may also learn from conducting sessions in areas of their own choosing with support and feedback.
· Video is used as a training tool and for providing feedback. Participants may keep copies of their own taped sessions for study at home.
· There are opportunities for individual coaching and mentoring of participant's outside work.
The experience of the Diploma provides an exceptional grounding for facilitation in any field.
